Rock On!

That's the name of the largest rock climbing event of the year in Singapore (as proclaimed by the emcee over these 5 days)!
I expected tiring work when I accepted helping because it was an event that's outdoors and definitely expecting hot sun! But other than the first few days and the hot afternoon sun at noon, it was raining at times and activities had to be postponed until it was safe to continue. And it's not like it'll continue immediately because some cleaning work had to be done to ensure safety of the participants on the rock wall- eg.slips and falls. Not to forget accounting for the time for demonstration of the particular route on the wall by the professionals, observation of the wall by the climbers and fixing of the rocks thing on the wall. So actually the actual process of the categories went pretty well and fast, and of course our tasks were rather simple since there were always more than enough of number of volunteers there. If you did see my tweets while I worked, my job consisted of looking after the 100plus and bananas in the holding area tent, registration of participants that lasted for half an hour only and video-ing participants climbing and overcoming the wall that could last for as long as 1.5hours (only) haha!
I wouldn't say I learnt a lot from the tasks I was given. But definitely from the running of a sports event. And of course, not forgetting learning something new about a sport that isn't THAT popular (because most people think of rock climbing as leisure and recreation activity). It really isn't that easy to climb that tall piece of wall as it may seem by just standing down there looking. It takes so much energy, stamina, patience and strategic brains to work your way out and top the wall! I see so many participants trying their very best to work to the top but many, sadly, failed halfway! And my heart totally drop when you see them falling off the wall and many a times I'll ust go "aww man, what a pity", because these guys really are just.pro.
Especially where the walls are slightly inclined to an angle that the participants have to swing themselves/ carry themselves defying the gravity. So much strength had to be used. And when the participants reach the land after climbing, you can just see the veins on the arms. Not forgetting seeing the muscles and nice body build while they climb- both male and female participants, just in case you thought I was only looking at the males. Haha!
And there's this pair of brothers from Indonesia, whom really had great and nice features, and we all (yes many of the volunteers there!) bet both of them would grow up to be handsome boys. TOO BAD THEY ARE TOO YOUNG FOR ME. Otherwise I don't mind asking them for number/ go back to Indonesia with them. JUST KIDDING, TOO EXTREME. HAHA. But both of them had the great potential. Both of them aren't tall, with the older brother as tall as carrie (in case you don't know, she's 1.53m :D ) and the younger brother only at the shoulder of the older brother. The older brother did quite well for the 'difficulty category', perhaps topping the few? (I didn't get to catch the prize giving ceremony). The younger brother was good, but a pity he was a little too short to his disadvantage because in the 'speed event' which he participated, he was a bit too short to climb the wall quickly as the distance of each rock to another was further for him as compared to the competing participant! What a pity. And we took a photo with them today! They were so shy please! HAHA. I bet they must be wondering why there are three weird ladies wanting to take with them! HAHA!
They came with their mother and a few more participants all from Indonesia. The mother was great too! Perhaps topping or getting the first because while other females in the same category in finals couldn't overcome the last wall, she finished it, and it was just a great scene where everyone was encouraging her, cheering and applauding for her when she clipped her rope to the last clip!
That's the difficulty event where participants had a limited time to complete the wall set by the route setter.
And I mentioned about the speed event too. That's where the participants got to climb real fast up to stop the buzzer! and can you imagine, climbing or rather jumping on the rocks on the wall of perhaps 10m in 6 or 7secs?! That's for the fastest male participant! Amazing show for speed event as well!
I thought the event organiser- Safra together with the Singapore Mountaineering Federation, could promote more because there weren't a lot of passerby or visitors of Safra observing the event. I think rock climbing event could be given more awareness to the public because I swear I learnt a lot about rock climbing from this event. And at one point in time, I had the sudden interest to sign up for rock climbing! Haha!
I shan't talk about our meals since it's catered and packed food so what to expect?! The instructors were nice people especially the in-charge of volunteers of belayers (he also assigned tasks to us) - we told him we didn't want to give out flyers unrelated to the event (as assigned by the facilitator of the event, also staff of that office), he immediately told us to just sit down and hold a stopwatch each hahahaha. Funny guy please! And he loves to say "basket sia!"
The volunteers (mostly belayers) were mostly malay ITE students and they're nice and funny bunch of people. I must say for most of the time in our resting room, while they spoke in malay and I can't understand for most of the time or all, they were still hilarious by the way they talk. And saturday night was the best night because we played pictionary together "Poly vs ITE" and I must admit it was a really full of laughters night.
Maggie, Shendy, Edy (these 2 are Maggie's friend's cousins and both of them are so cute together hahaha) and I went shooting with air rifle (our first times!) and we had much fun, even though our hands ached carrying the 5.5kg rifle! We could keep our "results cards" and I can only say I had great aiming at the beginning but seriously went from good to worse at the end! lol.
No more sleeping early so as to wake up at 5.40am and taking the train to yishun that's so ulu and far! :)
Next thursday to sunday is promoting for pokka! :)
